Approved Ordinance Regulating Smoking in Public Places and Workplaces

At the Board of Trustees meeting on December 19, 2005, the Mayor and Board of Trustees approved an ordinance that restricts smoking in public places and places of employment.

Deerfield's Smoke Free Air Ordinance is currently the strictest in the State of Illinois and places restrictions on the following:

* All enclosed public places, including restaurants, bars, and places of employment and home based businesses that employ more than one employee;

* Unenclosed public places such as public parks, outdoor dining areas, and school grounds; and

* Within 25 feet of all public entrances or entrances to places of employment, outdoor dining areas, or an outdoor event venue while an event is taking place (excluding those individuals walking past the above areas.) In addition, people may not congregate for the purpose of smoking within 25 feet of an entrance.

The Village of Deerfield joins other Illinois municipalities who have previously passed smoking ordinances, including Highland Park, Skokie, and Wilmette.
