Clean Air Counts in Your Community!

Clean Air Counts is a northeastern Illinois regional initiative to reduce ozone-causing emissions, thereby improving air quality and enhancing economic development. It is a collaborative effort between the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, City of Chicago, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5, and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. This multi-year initiative seeks to achieve specific and significant reductions in targeted smog-forming pollutants and major reductions in energy consumption.

As part of its involvement in the Clean Air Counts initiative, the Village of Deerfield has hosted the following events:

Lawn Care Buy Back Program:
The second annual Lawn Care Buy Back program was held on September 15, 2007. Nearly 40 pieces of ozone-harming gas-powered lawncare equipment were collected. Residents were provided $150 vouchers for gas-powered lawnmowers and $20 vouchers for gas-powered leaf blowers, vacuums, hedge trimmers, edgers, chain saws, chippers, shredders and mulchers. This program was funded by a grant from the Clean Air Counts Initiative. The Village hopes to sponsor a similar event like this again in 2008.

Gas Can Replacement Program:
Through another grant provided by Clean Air Counts, the Village of Deerfield offered a gas can replacement event, also on September 15, 2007. Nearly 80 residents turned in old gas cans and received a brand new, spill proof plastic gas can. These new gas cans are environmentally safe and help reduce the amount of gas vapor or liquid from getting into our land and air.
