EFFECTS
OF ALCOHOL
Alcohol's
effect on an individual is determined primarily by two
factors; the amount of alcohol consumed and the rate at
which it is absorbed into the body. Other contributing
factors include body weight, alcohol tolerance, mood,
environment and the amount of food consumed.
From the first drink, alcohol begins to effect
coordination and judgment. Vision and depth perception
become distorted; emotions and moods become
unpredictable. Reaction time slows.
The
belief that coffee, showers or food will help reduce
alcohol's effect on the body is false. Only time will
remove these effects. It takes the body approximately
one hour per drink to metabolize alcohol.
STATISTICS
Each
year, at least 22,000 people are killed in car related
crashes.
Someone is killed in an alcohol related crash
approximately every 24 minutes.
Alcohol is a factor in at least 27 percent of serious
injury crashes.
The proportion of fatal crashes that are alcohol related
is about three times greater at night than during the
day.
It is estimated that two out of every five Americans
will be involved in an alcohol related crash during
their lifetime.
About 58 percent of holiday motor vehicle fatalities are
