Community - Historical Society
The purpose of the Deerfield Area Historical Society is to preserve the significant historical sites, buildings and artifacts of the area, to contribute to the recorded history of Deerfield and to promote an understanding of the area's history by all means and programs appropriate to the purpose. Founded in 1968, the Deerfield Historical Society is an organization for the whole family. Each year the Society offers numerous activities and events catering to a variety of interests and ages.
The centerpiece of the Historic Village is the Caspar Ott Log House, built in 1837. The Ott House is considered the oldest building in Lake County. The Society's offices, Village Store, special historic displays and rural Post Office are located in the George Luther House, which was constructed in 1847.
One of the most popular buildings in the Village is the Little Red School House, a replica of a 19th-century one-room school. Each year fourth grade school children from District 109 step back in time and spend a day in the Little Red School House as part of their history program.
Membership benefits include: special programs, field trips to historic
sites, bi-annual dinners, sharing of common interests, a subscription to the The Fall Festival in September is the Society's annual fundraiser which consists of an afternoon of fun, food, musical entertainment, re-enactment groups, crafts and pioneer demonstrations. The Fall Festival also includes a full schedule of children's activities along with a special Children's Pioneer Costume Contest. The Society acknowledges the Deerfield, Bannockburn, Riverwoods Chamber of Commerce and the local business and service organizations who have gratefully supported ongoing restoration projects, the annual Fall Festival and other special programs. The Society is an active and growing organization that always welcomes new members and visitors. Membership includes Deerfield area residents who have a common interest in Deerfield's history.
